This semester Morningside's graduate student reading group will meet over lunch at noon on Thursdays in October (October 7, 14, 21, 28) in our office. We'll be reading Benjamin and Jenna Storey's new book Why We Are Restless, an exploration of the discontents of our liberal society and what the way forward might entail. The book will give us the chance to consider Montaigne, Pascal, Rousseau, and Tocqueville on our modern discomfort and the nature of happiness. The schedule of the readings is as follows:
October 7: Prologue; Introduction; Chapter 1: Montaigne
October 14: Chapter 2: Pascal
October 21: Chapter 3: Rousseau
October 28: Chapter 4: Tocqueville; Conclusion
This reading group is open to all graduate students and recent alumni. Invite your friends, and we hope to see you soon!
