The pragmatist philosophies of Ludwig Wittgenstein and William James were deeply intertwined with their experiences in medicine and science: Wittgenstein, in his clinical work at Guy‘s Hospital in World War II, and James, in his training as a physician. In this seminar, Matthew Morrison (Yale) will explore the ways in which medical reasoning can orient thinkers toward empiricism and pragmatism, in deliberate contrast to more totalizing approaches to truth.
On Tuesday, February 10, at 6 PM, join Morningside for an engaging discussion of medicine’s impact on the philosophies of Wittgenstein and James.
