Ernst Jünger's novella On the Marble Cliffs was published on the eve of the Second World War. A celebrated writer among German conservatives, Jünger's writing raised suspicions in the German army he both served and loathed. His book tells the story of an imaginary civilization living on the precipice of a violent catastrophe, and asks how traditional cultural and spiritual values can be preserved when all is seemingly lost.
