This seminar explores those aspects of the Metamorphoses that give the work an insistent modern resonance and relevance. In terms of Roman political commentary, socio-cultural implication, historical awareness, and psychological investigation, Ovid constructs a poem about change that is itself fundamentally slippery in its meanings, hard to deconstruct, and full of human eccentricity. The poem pulses with life, both ancient and modern, and this presentation aims to offer a brief reading of that Ovidian pulse.
This dinner seminar will be led by Professor Gareth Williams (Columbia). It is open to all undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates.
