Michel de Montaigne’s Essais represent a revival of an ancient style of philosophy, Pyrrhonian skepticism, which emphasizes the folly of the human aspiration to infallible knowledge and the woes that attend those who claim it. This seminar will explore the character of Montaigne’s skepticism, with special attention to the role of faith and the Pyrrhonian goal of lack-of-disturbance (ataraxia), as well as how Montaigne’s distinct literary style relates to this philosophical approach to life.
For this session, read Epistle to the Reader; and Apology for Raymond Seybond (selections).
On Wednesday, April 1, at 6 PM, join Morningside and Dhananjay Jagannathan (Hunter) for this discussion of Pyrrhonian skepticism.
